Barnegat Township measures 33.62 square miles, and is located in the south-central portion of Ocean County. Bordering municipalities are Stafford/Manahawkin, Long Beach Island, Waretown, and Lacey. There are numerous housing developments in the area, ranging anywhere from 100+ year old homes downtown to brand new homes presently being built. Also within the township are many adult communities. Some of them offer both new construction and resale and are very active. These communities include Heritage Bay, Heritage Point, Horizons, Mirage, and Pheasant Run.
There are a few small shopping centers in the community: Barnegat Village Square, which has, Burger King, Subbusters, and other small shops; Big Lots shopping center; and Gunning River Mall. Several antique shops are located in the downtown area. A few marinas along the bay offer the opportunity for local boating.
Several clubs and organizations are within Barnegat Township, including the VFW, American Legion, Garden Club, Women´s Club, Masonic lodge, Silverliners, and Primetimers, along with several Girl Scout and Boy Scout Troops.
The Barnegat Township Schools District includes 4 elementary schools, covering grades K-5, and a middle school, covering grades 6-8. The Barnegat High School, houses grades 9-12.
Many recreation opportunities abound in Barnegat. There are sports leagues in many areas from Little League baseball, to softball, football, and cheerleading, etc. Barnegat Recreation Center offers art, dance, theater, and sport programs from children and teens. Within the township are a public dock, public bay bathing beach, community center, and ball fields.
Barnegat offers many activities and events throughout the year, including a Memorial Day Parade (May), a Fourth of July Celebration, and Pirate´s Day (September).
