Long Beach Island is a barrier island spanning 18 miles along the Atlantic Ocean and Barnegat Bay. Access to LBI is from the town of Manahawkin, via Rt. 72. It is a very popular summer vacation spot. There are several towns within Long Beach Island, including Surf City, Ship Bottom, Long Beach Township, Beach Haven, Harvey Cedars and Barnegat Light.
In that Long Beach Island is a summer resort, many of the businesses and restaurants are only open just before Memorial Day through a little after Labor Day. There are a small number that do stay open all year round. Three popular attractions are Barnegat Lighthouse, in Barnegat Light, which is at the north end of LBI; Fantasy Island Amusement Park and Arcade, in Beach Haven, which is at the southern end of the island; and Surflight Theater, which is also in Beach Haven. And of course, the beaches!
Long Beach Island School District has 2 elementary schools housing grades K-6. There is also Beach Haven School in Beach Haven which also houses gades K-6. For grades 7-12, students go to Southern Regional Middle and High School in Manahawkin.
